The Americans, British and French resistance advanced from the west, and Russia from the east. Hitler committed suicide, the war ended and everyone headed home. Except not everyone did.
\n The Americans, British and French turned around and went home after helping prop up local governments of those who had opposed the Nazis. The Russians never really left. If they did leave, they propped up puppet regimes that the Soviet leaders in Moscow would exterminate if any resistance to Soviet rule cropped up. Instead of restoring democratic rule, the Soviets installed communist regimes.
\n
ON MARCH 5, 1946, less than a year after concluding the war, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill gave one of his most famous speeches at Westminster College in Fulton, MO. He declared, “From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the continent.” Thus began the Cold War. The Soviet Union, it was clear, intended to spread its communist ideology across the world and would work to destabilize the West.
\n The Western allied powers, along with a rebuilt Germany and Italy, collaborated on what to do to protect themselves from the Soviet threat. Many of the allies were broken and still had shattered infrastructure. What rose up from this was the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The treaty was signed on April 4, 1949, and to this day NATO remains the strongest and most important military alliance in the history of the world.
\n Article 5 of NATO’s treaty is the key provision. It states that an attack on one member is an attack on all members and all members of NATO will respond in kind. NATO is funded through a uniquely fair rule. Each member state agrees to contribute an amount of money based on a percentage of Gross National Income. As a nation becomes wealthier, the amount it contributes increases and as it becomes poorer, the amount it contributes decreases. The United States, being the wealthiest nation on the planet, has always contributed the most, but its total share has gone down over time as the European nations became stronger and more stable in the post-World War II era.
\n
WITH THE FALL of the Soviet Union, NATO expanded and many of the former Soviet bloc nations behind the iron curtain joined. The Baltic nations of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, all three of which resisted Soviet rule during their occupation, were three of the first Eastern European countries to join. Poland, which the Nazis and Soviets had carved up, also joined. Soon, almost every former Soviet controlled regime behind the iron curtain had joined NATO. Together, they pledged they’d never led a Russian threat destabilize them again.
\n These nations paid terrible prices for their Soviet occupation. Millions of citizens disappeared over the years, murdered by Soviet agents. Neighbors turned against neighbors. Joining NATO and moving toward Western culture has not only brought about stability, but also peace of mind. Now, in the 21st century, Russia is again saber rattling and trying to destabilize many of these countries.
\n Only once has NATO ever acted upon Article 5. It was not a Russian invasion, but a terrorist attack on the United States. On September 11, 2001, NATO allies surrounded our airspace and interests around the world, protecting us while we buried our dead and sorted out what happened. Then they joined us in Afghanistan to shut down the Taliban.
\n
IT IS THEREFORE unfortunate that a major party candidate for President of the United States would suggest NATO should be a shakedown scheme where the United States does not return the favor of alliance unless our allies “pay up.” Friendship and alliances do not come to bullies demanding lunch money for protection. They come through shared interests. Our NATO allies protected us and helped us after September 11, 2001, for the first time activating Article 5 of the NATO treaty. It is awful to think our response should be these nations, once torn apart by communism and now threatened by a dangerously resurgent Russian menace, should have to pay us to do the right thing.
\n', created = 1574244137, expire = 1574330537, headers = '', serialized = 0 WHERE cid = '2:fd4da3a9bad005fdb4fe0df0cdad75f6' in /home/conserva/public_html/includes/cache.inc on line 112.

Democrats spent much more energy in Philadelphia talking about confiscating gun rights and letting men in my daughter’s bathroom. Curiously, the Democrats did spend a lot more time talking about God than the GOP did.
\n On Wednesday night, President Obama gave a stirring address that, in part, was the Republican response to Donald Trump. In part it was a stirring defense of progressivism. But like Bill Clinton totally skipping the year 1998 in his speech, Barack Obama totally skipped over the lack of economic growth during his entire tenure in office. Yes, unemployment is down. But that has more to do with people giving up looking for jobs than with new jobs being created.
\n
ALONG THE way, when Democrats were not talking about taking away guns or trying to justify the murder of police or ignoring the growing terrorist threats at home and abroad, they stuck to a common theme. The Democrats have discovered a new right. It is the right of people to live a certain lifestyle at a certain income if people work forty hours a week.
\n It sounds like a wonderful idea. Why shouldn’t Americans be guaranteed a certain level of income for hard work? If you disagree with the idea, you might just be a cruel and heartless person. Well, put me in the cruel and heartless camp. The bumper sticker idea will have long range and terrible consequences.
\n First, life is not fair. The Democrats are championing this idea to gloss over the fact that their ideas have caused economic stagnation. Instead of allowing the private sector to thrive, they just want to raise taxes from the successful and give to those who are not successful. But life is inherently not fair. Some people will always have better jobs and some people will make better life choices.
\n
SECOND, THIS is welfare disguised. By the 1990s — when Bill Clinton was president — we learned that some people could get comfortable living on a welfare check and checked out of work. Their children spiraled into a cycle of dependency and poverty. In Genesis, God put Adam and Eve to work in the garden. There is something soul nourishing about work. When we all get to Heaven we will all have jobs. Getting people comfortable not working sucks their souls away and destroys their families.
\n But putting people to work and guaranteeing them a lifestyle does much the same. It encourages complacency and saps the desire to get ahead for many people. The reality is that many people can be given incentive to smother their ambitions. Guarantee a roof over their heads, enough money for cable television, and watch as they never strive to do better. Then watch as their children, likewise, accept complacency.
\n Frankly, it is more immoral to set a floor of income and lifestyle below which someone cannot fall because it provides too many disincentives for too many people to never even try to get off the floor. Democrats claim we should do this for moral and compassionate reasons. The reality is that we should avoid doing it for moral and compassionate reasons.
\n The well-worn saying about teaching a man to fish versus giving him fish plays directly into why this new idea is terrible. In addition to it being completely outside the history of the world and terrible economics, it will create a new culture of dependency.
\n
THIRD, WE do not have the money. When Lyndon Johnson declared a war on poverty the national debt was less than $360 billion. By the time President Obama leaves office it will be $22 trillion. Taking from the successful to redistribute to those at the bottom of the economic ladder sounds compassionate and caring. But it will break the bank and take away any incentive for the top to keep generating tax revenue and the bottom to ever get off the floor.
\n', created = 1574244137, expire = 1574330537, headers = '', serialized = 0 WHERE cid = '2:de5423a28853a982683313ae0711985c' in /home/conserva/public_html/includes/cache.inc on line 112.

Cassandra was the daughter of King Priam and Queen Hecuba of Troy. She had the gift of prophesy, but after rejecting the advances of the god Apollo, he cursed her so that none would believe her prophesies. She warned the Trojans that Greeks were in the Trojan Horse. She foresaw the fall of Troy. A prisoner and concubine after the war of Agamemnon, Clytemnestra, the king’s wife, had Cassandra murdered. Cassandra saw all this coming and no one believed her.
\n
IT IS NO easy thing to see what is coming and have the party ignore you, friends reject you, and others assail you. Advertisers of my show have been targeted for harassment with some stepping back. Listeners and readers email me on a daily basis to say they are done with me. People have shown up on my doorstep at my home and at my office. Random strangers have berated me in public in front of my kids that I am ruining my kids’ future.
\n But I believe I am right.
\n For the entire primary season I chose to suspend belief and ignore the polls, convinced that Trump was a passing fad. But he is not. He is now the party nominee. It is now his supporters who suspend belief and concoct conspiracy theories to convince themselves he can win. I felt, as a formerly elected Republican and someone who has spent a long time in party politics, that I had a duty to advise and warn.
\n Since February, I have been warning both that Trump could not beat Hillary Clinton in November and that there is no way that I — or many conservatives of faith — could actually support him. There is no grand and elaborate conspiracy of pollsters in America. Trump has only been ahead in nine polls since January and the majority of those are Rasmussen polls, which are not worth the paper they are printed on.
\n The warnings have all fallen on deaf ears. The GOP had one job this year and that was to beat Hillary Clinton. I believe they have failed at that task and have not only failed, but they have put a Clinton donor in charge of their own party.
\n
I HAVE DONE my bit to sound the alarm, raise the red flag, and point out the now near certain future of a Clinton administration. There have been at least a half dozen elected Republicans who took the stage in Cleveland this past week who have privately, personally told me they agree that Trump will lose. Others, like Tom Cotton, have not told me this, but are already beginning to woo the South Carolina, Iowa, and New Hampshire delegations — already campaigning for 2020 because they too know Clinton is going to win.
\n Events can change things. There could be some unforeseen circumstance that gets Trump elected. The Kremlin could, I suppose, rig voting machines across the nation to help him. A terrible terrorist attack or race riots could stoke enough fear to see a wholesale abandonment of Clinton. Trump’s election is not impossible, but is so improbable and would take events so terrible that even if he got elected we’d all recognize he is wholly unqualified for the times that caused his election.
\n I have done what I thought necessary. I will move on to other things. I see Clinton and Trump both as unqualified for office. If I vote in the Presidential race at all, I will write in Peyton Manning. At least he’s a winner of good character. Certainly he won’t win, but at least I’ll have voted for someone morally fit for office.
\n
I WILL shake the dust off my feet and move on. Cheeto Jesus is now the Republican nominee, which means Hillary Clinton will most likely be President of the United States. The only people who say such things are people who have never tried to buy guns. It is simply not true. The problem is not that the president said it, but that the president used a nonpartisan memorial service for dead police officers to lie in the name of his preferred public policy.
\n
WHILE DEMOCRATS may appreciate President Obama’s pursuit of taking away Americans’ guns, half the nation does not. Our president, instead of using an opportunity to unite the nation in mourning and appreciation for lives well-lived, decided to strike a divisive, partisan tone. That service was not the time to do so.
\n Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a sitting justice on the United States Supreme Court, decided to speak about her opposition to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. Even the liberal New York Times derided her decision to do so. But the president’s administration praised her. Justices on the Supreme Court are supposed to be outside politics and keep their opinions on active campaigns to themselves. Bush v. Gore is a case within living memory and Ginsburg might very well be called upon to exercise judgment in a current electoral case. But she has disqualified herself and may yet refuse to step aside if such a case arose.
\n Hillary Clinton violated both law and regulation to keep a private email server and use it to send and receive classified information. An investigation found that not only had she failed to hand over evidence, but that she and her legal team deleted evidence. On top of that, she allowed lawyers without security clearances to review classified information. But no one will punish her because she is a major party figure running for President of the United States.
\n
AT YALE, an employee took a broomstick and smashed a historic stained glass window, the bottom of which depicted slaves carrying cotton. While the employee was dismissed, he will not be prosecuted, nor will the University seek restitution for the damage. At other universities, students and faculty are getting away with vandalism because the vandalism is against out of favor symbols and subjects.
\n Taken individually, these events are a bit meaningless. But together they point to a break down in social civility, law and order. When the president no longer understands that some events should not be politicized; when Supreme Court justices are emboldened to go beyond the bounds of decorum; when the public sees public officials are above the law; and when criminals are given passes because their crime was against out of favor subjects, we as a society begin to collapse. It may sound dramatic, but each is an indication that the boundaries around civil society and discourse have collapse. Each is an indication that merit is outfoxed by stations in life.
\n Theologian Tim Keller quoted Yale professor Arthur Leff in his book, The Reason for God. Leff said, “When would it be impermissible to make the formal intellectual equivalent of what is known in barrooms and schoolyards as ‘the grand Sez Who?’ In the absence of God ... each ... ethical and legal system ... will be differentiated by the answer it chooses to give to one key question: who among us ... ought to be able to declare “law” that ought to be obeyed? Stated that baldly, the question is so intellectually unsettling that one would expect to find a noticeable number of legal and ethical thinkers trying not to come to grips with it ... Either God exists or He does not, but if He does not, nothing and no one else can take His place.”
\n
A SOCIETY premised on common morals is premised on universal rights and wrongs. We went through a thorough process to identify all of my work related emails and deliver them to the State Department. At the end, I chose not to keep my private personal emails.
\n COMEY: The FBI also discovered several thousand work-related emails that were not in the group of 30,000 that were returned by Secretary Clinton to State in 2014. Some had been deleted over the years and we found traces of them on devices that supported or were connected to the private email domain.
\n CLINTON: I did not email any classified material to anyone on my email. There is no classified material. So I’m certainly well aware of the classification requirements and did not send classified material.
\n COMEY: From the group of 30,000 emails returned to the State Department, 110 emails in 52 email chains have been determined by the owning agency to contain classified information at the time they were sent or received. Eight of those chains contained information that was Top Secret at the time they were sent; 36 chains contained Secret information at the time; and eight contained Confidential information, which is the lowest level of classification. Separate from those, about 2,000 additional e-mails were “up-classified” to make them Confidential; the information in those had not been classified at the time the emails were sent.
\n
CLINTON: But whether it was a personal account or a government account, I did not send classified material and I did not receive any material that was marked or designated classified, which is the way you know whether something is.
\n COMEY: With respect to the thousands of emails we found that were not among those produced to State, agencies have concluded that three of those were classified at the time they were sent or received, one at the Secret level and two at the Confidential level.
\n CLINTON: Well, my personal emails are my personal business, right?
\n COMEY: With respect to potential computer intrusion by hostile actors, we did not find direct evidence that Secretary Clinton’s personal email domain, in its various configurations since 2009, was successfully hacked. But, given the nature of the system and of the actors potentially involved, we assess that we would be unlikely to see such direct evidence. We do assess that hostile actors gained access to the private commercial email accounts of people with whom Secretary Clinton was in regular contact from her personal account. We also assess that Secretary Clinton’s use of a personal email domain was both known by a large number of people and readily apparent. She also used her personal email extensively while outside the United States, including sending and receiving work-related emails in the territory of sophisticated adversaries. Given that combination of factors, we assess it is possible that hostile actors gained access to Secretary Clinton’s personal email account.
\n
IN A NORMAL world, what the FBI discovered about Clinton’s emails would disqualify her from office. But these are not normal times. The FBI Director laid out an impressive case against Mrs. Clinton, but will not recommend an indictment. There is too much on the line for us to let that happen. The Supreme Court decisions in the past two weeks prove it. But to stop Hillary Clinton from becoming President, Republicans must stop Donald Trump from becoming the Republican nominee. Trump as the nominee makes it vastly more likely that Hillary Clinton will become president.
\n
NO AMOUNT of calls for rallying to Trump’s banner will help him. The Republican Party is already the smaller of the two major political parties. Even if all the Republicans who oppose him — myself included — should suddenly support him, it would not be enough. His negatives are over 70 percent. He hovers around 30 percent in the polls. His fundraising is anemic. He is prone to gaffes of extraordinary size. He has no campaign apparatus to turn people out in November and his campaign surrogates have no compelling message to convert the undecided to supporters.
\n In the past 24 public opinion polls, Trump has lost all but one. For those who say variants of, “everybody said he’d lose in the primaries and look what happened,” they should be reminded that those of us, myself included, who did say that chose to ignore the polling in the primaries. The polling was right in the primaries. The polling is right headed into the general election as well.
\n The only reason Donald Trump is not doing worse right now is because the Democrats have nominated Hillary Clinton. Fifty percent of the country finds her unfavorable. But Donald Trump is still losing to her. The most recent Washington Post — ABC News poll shows that “so strong is many Americans’ opposition to Clinton and desire for a change in Washington that even some registering their disapproval of Trump say that as of now they feel compelled to vote for him.” But Trump still loses to Clinton in that poll by 12 percent, even with that level of disapproval for Clinton. The disapproval for Trump is even more.
\n
TRUMP HAS less than $2 million in the bank. Trump claims he will be competitive in Calif., N.Y., and Md. In the first and second, Trump got less votes winning than Bernie Sanders did losing in the Democratic primaries. In the third, the state’s Republican governor refuses to endorse Trump. Every time Trump announces a path forward in newly competitive states, polling shows that not only is he delusional, but Republican states are the ones that are becoming competitive for Clinton. Major Republicans, including the governors of Md., Mass., Mich., Ohio, and others refuse to endorse Trump.
\n To believe Donald Trump is going to beat Hillary Clinton requires one to believe so much that is not so and ignore reality. The reality is that this emperor has no clothes. The campaign, laid naked and bare, is a disaster built on top of a steaming divot. The last ground on which Trump’s voters stand is that Ronald Reagan was in the thirties behind Jimmy Carter in 1980 at this point. But even that is not so. Only the Gallup poll showed that. The other polls and the polling average itself in 1980 had Ronald Reagan ahead of Jimmy Carter by the end of May in 1980 and Reagan never again fell behind Carter.
\n
CONSERVATIVES MUST stop Hillary Clinton, and Donald Trump is too flawed a vessel for the Republican Party to sail to victory against her. NATO: August 5, 2016 As World War II wound down, the Allied forces advanced on Berlin from two directions. The Americans, British and French resistance advanced from the west, and Russia from the east. Hitler committed suicide, the war ended and everyone headed home. Except not everyone did. The Americans, British and French turned around and went home after helping prop up local governments of...

REDISTRIBUTION: July 29, 2016 The Republicans spent their week in Cleveland talking about terrorism and the lack of jobs around the country. Democrats spent much more energy in Philadelphia talking about confiscating gun rights and letting men in my daughter’s bathroom. Curiously, the Democrats did spend a lot more time talking about God...

DONALD TRUMP: July 22, 2016 It is no easy thing being the Cassandra among friends and party faithful. Cassandra was the daughter of King Priam and Queen Hecuba of Troy. She had the gift of prophesy, but after rejecting the advances of the god Apollo, he cursed her so that none would believe her prophesies. She warned the Trojans that Greeks were...

RULE OF LAW: July 15, 2016 The President of the United States went to the memorial service for the Dallas police officers gunned down while protecting and serving. Taking the podium, the President quoted scripture, mourned the dead, then turned decidedly partisan. The president claimed it is easier for kids to buy guns than either computers or...

DOUBLE STANDARD: July 8, 2016 HILLARY CLINTON: I opted for convenience to use my personal email account, which was allowed by the State Department, because I thought it would be easier to carry just one device for my work and for my personal emails instead of two. FBI DIRECTOR JAMES COMEY: Secretary Clinton used several different servers and...

2016 ELECTION: July 1, 2016 What is most probable in 2016 and more obvious each day is that with Donald Trump as the Republican nominee, Hillary Clinton will be the next president of the United States. There is too much on the line for us to let that happen. The Supreme Court decisions in the past two weeks prove it. But to stop Hillary Clinton...
