George Clooney became famous playing Dr. Doug Ross in the TV medical drama “ER,” but years earlier he played Ace, an emergency medical technician, in a medical sitcom called “E/R” that ran for 22 episodes in 1984-85. Like “ER” the drama, “E/R” the sitcom was set at a hospital in Chicago, and Mary McDonnell was one of the stars. Unlike “ER,” “E/R” was produced by the same company that produced “The Jeffersons.” Thus, Sherman Hemsley appeared in the pilot episode as George Jefferson.

LESLIE’S TRIVIA BITS: April 10, 2023

The Liberty Bell isn’t the only famous bell with a characteristic crack. The first Big Ben, at the Houses of Parliament in London, cracked beyond repair in 1857 while it was being tested. The second cracked after about three months, was mended and still hangs in the tower. The 202-ton, 20-foot-tall Tsar Bell in Moscow didn’t even make it that far. In 1737, an 11.5-ton piece of the bell broke off during a massive fire. The Tsar Bell — the world’s largest — sits at ground level at the Kremlin.

LESLIE’S TRIVIA BITS: April 3, 2023

Just 250 or so people live on the Pacific atoll Pingelap, and about 10% of them are completely colorblind. This isn’t ordinary colorblindness, though. It’s the result of a rare hereditary condition called achromatopsia that inhibits development of cone cell color receptors in their eyes. The prevalence can be traced to a tribal chief on the island, who passed the condition to the generation that followed him. It’s continued ever since. By comparison, achromatopsia affects about 1 in every 30,000 Americans.

LESLIE’S TRIVIA BITS: March 27, 2023

The Earth has three distinct layers. At its center is a super-hot metallic core. Surrounding that is the mantle, which is about 1,700 miles deep. The outer layer is the crust. And between the mantle and the crust is a defined zone known as the Mohorovicic discontinuity, or the Moho. It’s named for Croatian seismologist Andrija Mohorovicic, who demonstrated its existence by studying the patterns of seismic waves from an earthquake that hit Croatia in 1909.

LESLIE’S TRIVIA BITS: March 20, 2023

Plenty of college campuses have casual dining establishments, but only one has the original Pizza Hut. That’s Wichita State University, where Pizza Hut founders Dan and Frank Carney were students in the 1950s. Their original 500-square-foot brick building opened in 1958, about two miles from campus. The building’s sign could only accommodate nine letters. Knowing that PIZZA would be five of them, the brothers decided on HUT for the rest — and a tradition was born. In 1986, the original Pizza Hut was moved to campus. It’s now a museum.

LESLIE’S TRIVIA BITS: March 13, 2023

Tennis star Chris Evert didn’t invent the diamond tennis bracelet, but she made it famous. Back in the 1980s, Evert wore what was then known as a diamond eternity bracelet, or line bracelet, when she played. No one took much notice until the 1987 U.S. Open, when Evert’s bracelet flew off her wrist during a match. Play was stopped so she could recover the broken bracelet. That made news. Before long, everyone was talking about — and shopping for — “tennis” bracelets like Chris Evert’s.

LESLIE’S TRIVIA BITS: March 6, 2023

American artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler gave many of his paintings musical titles, such as the night scene he called “Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket,” now at the Detroit Institute of Arts, and “Symphony in Gray and Green: The Ocean” at the Frick Collection in New York City. Most famous of all is “Arrangement in Grey and Black, No. 1” at the Musee d’Orsay in Paris. That’s the portrait most of us know as “Whistler’s Mother.”

LESLIE’S TRIVIA BITS: February 27, 2023

The first jockey inducted into the National Racing Hall of Fame was Isaac Burns Murphy, who rode 530 winners in 1,538 races, between 1876 and 1895 — for a remarkable 34.46% career victory rate. Murphy won his first Kentucky Derby in 1884 and went on to win that race twice more — in 1890 and 1891 — making him the first jockey with consecutive Kentucky Derby victories and the first to win it three times.

LESLIE’S TRIVA BITS: February 20, 2023

Official state bird, tree, song ... these we expect. Official state nut? Well, yes. Some states do have one. Passion for pralines and pie led to the pecan becoming the official state nut of Alabama and Arkansas. Pecans are the “official state health nut” of Texas as well. For Missouri, the official state nut is the eastern black walnut. For Oregon, it’s the hazelnut, since Oregon grows about 98% of all the hazelnuts produced in the United States.

LESLIE’S TRIVIA BITS: February 13, 2023

Sheep’s eyes are set wide on their heads, and their pupils are rectangular, which gives them expansive peripheral vision: 270 to 320 degrees. That means a sheep can see most of the way behind itself without turning its head. Sheep are naturally farsighted, and they can distinguish colors, but their depth perception tends to be poor. So, they’re good at spotting a threat from far away but less adept at seeing what’s right in front of their noses.
